Herb Caplan, the founder and namesake of Caplan’s, began his family’s legacy by selling radios in Toronto in the 1930’s. After trying several locations, Herb opened a store in the early 1940’s at Eglinton Avenue and Bathurst Street, where he remained for many years.

By 1953, with his 18-year old son Martin at his side, Herb decided to purchase 1107 Weston Road, just south of Eglinton. Business was expanding, which now included TVs, appliances and furniture, and the intention was to use this location for warehouse space. A simple retail component was incorporated into this space and with just a desk, chair and used billing machine Martin Caplan began a second generation of retailing tradition.

The Weston Rd. location flourished – thanks to its appeal to the surrounding working class neighbourhood who appreciated good quality at an affordable price. Imagine, back then a bedroom set could be bought for a mere $39.00!

Steady expansion due to increased customer demand for home furnishings and electronics continued at this location; until in 1969, a competitor opened a warehouse-style store next door at 1111 Weston Rd. The newcomer was called “No Frills”. To retain and attract new customers, Caplan’s cleverly covered their windows in signage using similar colours and called themselves “Free Frills”. The strategy worked and when “No Frills” shut their doors in 1979, Caplan’s scooped up the space creating the strong exterior presence that is still evident today.

Many marketing strategies have come and gone at Caplan’s over the years. By the 1990’s Caplan’s, evolving with the times, made the decision to focus exclusively on appliances to capitalize on heightened consumer interest in this industry’s rapidly changing technologies.

Caplan’s most recent metamorphosis has been the introduction of designer showcase kitchens in the main showroom that feature high-end appliances from the best brands. These inspiring settings not only showcase amazing appliances, but also help customers to visualize how their dream kitchen could become a reality.

Other recent interior changes at Caplan’s was the launch of what has become our very popular
Appliance Outlet
. Complementing our appliance business on the lower level of the store is our Bed Shoppe, featuring mattresses such as Tempur-Pedic and Simmons.

Although many changes have occurred over the years, Caplan’s today is still a proud family business with Herb’s grandson, Robert, having taken over the helm. His father Martin may have retired, but mother Fran, who joined the business 27 years ago remains very involved. The staff at Caplan’s are their extended family. Many have been with us for over 10 years and several have called Caplan’s their home away from home for over 20 years. They provide our customers with the knowledge, expertise and warmth needed to make informed purchases in a no-pressure environment. After all, when you’re a family business you should be treated like family!
